Two global pharma companies recently merged to form a single partnering organization. While both companies were highly desired by others to partner with, the merger presented a challenge to the trusted relationships each company enjoyed with its partners. Each company had its own legacy information systems and needed to gain efficiencies from the merger to have a single partnering system, without violating its legacy trusted relationships
Solution :Using the unique end-to-end approach of Inova’s BD&L system, this company was able to configure the system to manage both the BD and the Alliance Management functions of the now merged organization. Through workshops with key stakeholders in Business Development and Alliance Management from both legacy organizations, the combined team created a standardized configuration, which combined common information, yet allowed for certain unique pieces of information from each team to be maintained. Using the flexible security model, this company was able to create a single partnering system that shared information where possible, yet maintained the separation between the teams in order to respect the confidentiality requirements of its legacy partner relationships.
Outcome:This company was able to merge two organizations with very different cultures, but each having a strong reputation for trustworthiness in their partner relationships, into a single partnering organization, which continued to maintain a high caliber of trust and professionalism. The combined system was able to provide the visibility across the combined organization necessary for efficient partnering and dealmaking, yet provided a robust and secure infrastructure to support the strict governance requirements of its partnerships.
The alliance team of this large pharmaceutical company, have routinely experienced coordination issues between their finance and R&D teams during the integration of the partner assets in their development pipeline. Since finance and R&D teams are spread across multiple different places and structures, project managers spend a lot of time in low value synchronization tasks while still running the risk of overlooking obligations triggered by reaching milestones or by meeting contractually agreed terms.
Solution:Using Inova’s Alliance Manager module the company has a global and up-to-date vision on projects progress, development or clinical milestones achieved, as well as contract obligations and alliance governance. Furthermore, using Web services and connectors, payments and other obligations are automatically notified to all the relevant parties for optimal execution.
Outcome:Embarrassing oversights are eliminated, coordination across internal and external teams is greatly enhanced. The company is able to guaranty a high quality partner management program and develop a reputation of partner-of-choice in the industry.
ALLIANCE
An alliance is an agreement between companies. Innovation related alliances are usually motivated by risk sharing, cost reduction, access to capabilities and skills. Alliances are bounded by one or more agreements with equitable risk and opportunity share for all parties involved and are typically managed by integrated project teams. Alliances involve a large degree of coordination between these integrated project teams and other company functions such as Finance, Manufacturing, etc. The best partnering organizations get from their network of partners a constant flow of new innovation opportunities. Alliances can last as much as 10 years or more. The end of an alliance is the exit point of the partnering life cycle for that partner.
