Pain:

A global pharmaceutical company with many BD teams in diverse functional departments was faced with the challenge of streamlining its licensing deal process and increasing its deal flow. Due to the historical evolution of many diverse Business Development teams, their deal information was contained in more than 20 different databases.

Solutions

Using the configurability of the Business Development suite, this company was able to create a unified system that met the needs of all their BD teams. Using Inova’s professional services, they were able to migrate these 20 different databases into one common repository, which gave them visibility into all deals across the organization, preventing duplication of efforts and potential conflicts. Management was able to accurately track its deal flow and make strategic decisions more effectively.

Outcome:

BD professionals from every department now have access to one single “source of truth”, and management is now able to quickly report on the status of deals by business unit, or for the entire company. More effective decision-making is now achieved by having a common set of deal metrics and reporting. These gains in efficiency have allowed this company to close better deals faster and become a more desirable partner to work with.

DEALS

A transaction or deal is a contract that is a legally enforceable agreement between two or more parties with mutual obligations. The most frequent types of transactions resulting from business development activities include: licensing, mergers and acquisitions, asset purchase and divestitures, co-development, and joint-ventures. Transactions undergo a thorough screening process called due-diligence. Due-diligence reviews the legal, financial, intellectual property, scientific, manufacturing feasibility and marketing aspects of the opportunity under evaluation. The closing of a transaction is the entry point in the alliance management stage of the partnering life cycle.
